New Etsy Shop - The Sleepy Seahorse!

After years of collecting seashells and making things out of them, I've finally decided to put my passion and hobby to good use and sell some of the shell crafts that I make.  So after working up a small inventory of items, I opened a shop on Etsy called The Sleepy Seahorse.  The name came to my mother and me totally on a whim in the middle of the night when we were brainstorming shop name ideas.  It sounded like a silly name at first, but as we began to imagine the possibilities of imagery surrounding a sleeping seahorse, we realized how charming the name was, and it stuck! 

I'd like to extend a big thank you to my friend Molly Jo Scott for lending me her artistic talents and creating the beautiful and whimsical Sleepy Seahorse artwork.

Growing up in south Florida, I've always loved the beach and the ocean, and collecting seashells is something special that I'm able to share with my family, especially my mom.  There is so much fun in basically going on a treasure hunt and anticipating the beautiful and totally unique shells that we will hopefully find.  Even on days where the shelling is sparse, there is nothing like being outside in the fresh salty sea air, getting some sun, being close to or in the water, and spending quality time with each other.  My family has been lived in Florida since the 1940's, and salt water is in our veins. 

I've always been inspired by the beautiful shells that a visually unappealing snail-like creature can make and call home.  Some seashells are so beautiful that it almost seems as though the mollusk takes pride in his lovely home, and of course no two are exactly alike.  This is why seashells are a great medium for crafts and art, because they are all so unique.  I like to think of them as one of nature's gifts to us - gifts from the sea. 

With the holidays coming, my shop contains many ornaments at this time.  They could be used on a Christmas tree, but many of them would also be lovely additions to beach house/wedding décor as well.  I'm also selling shell boxes, mirrors, and photo frames, and in the future there will be much more to come.  I use mostly Florida shells, hand picked from the beaches by me.
